Head-to-Head vs. L'Oreal EverStrong Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Posted by Bill DAlessandro on

Hey there Nurture My Body Family!

This week we are going head-to-head (pun intended) with L’Oreal.  I know, I know….it’s a pretty big name to take on.  But we are confident enough in our product to go down that road. :)

After I tried the Nurture My Body Organic Shampoo I decided that I never wanted to go back to a non-organic shampoo.  However, I was forced to switch back for the sake of this experiment. :(

Two weeks ago I purchased the L’Oreal EverStrong Sulfate-Free Shampoo.

At first glance, I was feeling pretty warm and fuzzy about my new EverStrong Sulfate-Free Shampoo.

Sodium cocoyl isethionate, the second ingredient in the formula, is a mild surfactant derived from coconut oil that actually has some conditioning properties, so in theory, it is one cleanser that may replace some of the moisture that it's taking.  But then things begin to go downhill.

Additional primary cleansers and foaming agents include sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, which can be an irritant and isn't considered very mild nor natural, and disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, which the EWG actually rates as a moderate contamination hazard ingredient because of its potential to carry ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane, known toxins and carcinogens.

Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate (the fifth ingredient) is even worse, since it actually increases absorption levels, and can be contaminated with nitrosamines. There are also a number of PEGs, preservatives (like methylisothiazolinone, a human skin toxicant according to the CIR), and some irritating fragrance ingredients, although natural juniperus communis fruit oil and rosemary oil do provide the pleasant juniper and rosemary scent.

L'Oreal may have gotten rid of the harsh sulfates, but it seems to have replaced them with unsavory substitutes. Yes, it is 100% vegan.  Yes, my hair did feel soft and moisturized after using it.  Yes, it did foam well.

However, I am not willing to trade my passion for safe beauty products for a lower price tag with potentially harmful ingredients.
